English Translation

1. "Chop sugar-cane and sugar it will reveal;
Split up the Oyster and the Pearl's revealed;
But be not yourself less yielding than a stone Khushal,
From some stones when they're burnt is gold congealed."

2. "Life is but a game of hazard,
Set the stakes and call the main;
Hoarded gold is barren metal,
Nothing venture nothing gain;
Death or victory, thy motto,
Thine the throne or thine the bier."

3. Qismet.

"What doth profit man his striving?
What availeth his contriving?
Fate will use him as it will;
Be mankind arrayed against thee
All the world one blade against thee;
Pointed immenint to kill;
Bullet, arrow, swordsman, spearman,
Nothing heed them all are powerless until
Doom descends. A plundering rover
How the honey bee doth hover
O'er the rose to snatch her fill;
Fate like her, Khushal is winging;
Up and set the world-a-ringing
With thy bravery and skill.
Would'st thou live in song and story?
Youth's the time for deeds of glory,
Youth is ardent, age is chill;
All the sires the spear have shaken
All thy sires the sword hath taken,
Follow them and fear no ill."
